Frequently Asked Questions

1.       Can a single suppressor work for multiple calibers?

Answer:   It all depends on the suppressor being used and the threads on the suppressor.  In most cases, if the suppressor was built to handle larger caliber bullets it will work on smaller caliber ones as well.  If you are not sure, always check with the manufacturer.  Sometimes smaller caliber cartridges will not work with a suppressor due to higher pressures.

2.       What is the difference between a silencer and a suppressor?

Answer: Nothing, they both intend to mean the same thing. Although a suppressor actually suppresses the sound and does not silence it completely.  Because of this, most manufacturers in the industry use the term suppressor, but either term is correct.  The original commercially available suppressor was built by Hiram Maxim and was termed a silencer.  The ATF refers to these devices as a silencers.

3.       What makes the suppressor work?

Answer: There are many different factors that make a silencer work. The main aspect is the baffles inside it which slow the gases down and in turn reduces the sound impulse. Volume, length, the number of baffles, and the geometry of the baffles all contribute to reducing the noise of the firearm. The technology and R&D invested into the baffle design is what makes some suppressors more effective than others.

4.       Are suppressed weapons really “movie quiet"?

Answer: No. Suppressed weapons are definately quieter, but not silent like we see in the movies.

 5.       Does HTG offer a quick disconnect design?

Answer: We are currently developing a QD system that will partner with a flash hider. These types of systems are desirable for certain military applications, but in our opinion, provide little advantage to civilian shooters. Our first prototypes are currently being tested, and products are expected to be available in late summer of 2011.

 6.       What is the life expectance of a suppressor?

Answer: With our break-down models, it should last as long as you own your gun and beyond. Like most things, as long as you take care of it and do proper cleaning and maintenance of it, it will last a lifetime.

 7.       Can a revolver be suppressed?

Answer:  No, because the gases can escape from between the cylinder and barrel and are not contained in the barrel and suppressor.

8.     What paperwork do I need to transfer a suppressor?

Answer:  You will need a Form 4, Certificate of Compliance, and Fingerprint Cards.  Click here for for a helpful guide.
